God Enjoys Showing Mercy to His Children
Adventure 3: The Goodness of God
Mission: 7

Question Answer
Would God rather punish or forgive?

God loves to forgive and to show us mercy by withholding the judgment we rightfully deserve. Lamentations 3:22 – Through the LORD's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.

The Difference This Truth Makes
The cross is a beautiful picture of the mercy of God. When Jesus was dying on it, He cried out, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do!” Even though all those men deserved to be killed because of what they were doing, God, in His mercy, wanted them to be forgiven. God does not have to work at being merciful – it is part of His very nature. Even when God made Adam and Eve leave the Garden of Eden, it was a merciful act (Genesis 3:22-23). If they had stayed in Eden and eaten of the Tree of Life, they would have lived forever under the curse caused by their sin. God wanted them to be reconciled to Him. Even though God judged them by making them leave that paradise, He did so out of His great mercy. God is very concerned that we show mercy like He does. In fact, in Matthew, we find out that if we do not forgive others, then God will not forgive us! Matthew 6:15 – But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
