God’s Word Tells Us There Is Only One God
Adventure 4: The Trinity
Does the Bible teach that there is only one true God?
The Bible teaches that the LORD God is the one and only true God. Deuteronomy 6:4 – Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!
This Truth Makes
God is One. There are not three different gods. Whatever God is, there is only One of Him! The substance of God (what He is) is One, but that substance is three unique Persons – all of Whom are God. Christians talk about the unity (oneness) of the Trinity because there are Three Who are One. Christians talk about the diversity (three-ness) of the Trinity because there is One Who is Three.
One Bible teacher said it like this: “God is one What and three Who’s.” In other words, God is One in His essential Being but there are three Persons Who are God.
Someone might think that God has just shown Himself in three different forms throughout history. Some even believe God was first the Father, then He became the Son, and now He is the Holy Spirit. These views are not biblical ways of understanding the Trinity.
Christ said that He was going to go to the Father (John 16:16) and that He would send the Holy Spirit (John 16:7). Clearly, there is a difference between the three Persons of the Trinity. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Father, and the Holy Spirit is not the Son. They are diverse, yet united.
