God Created Humans Out of Dust
Adventure 6: God's View of You
How did the first human being get here?
The LORD God created the first man, Adam, out of dust and breathed life into him. Genesis 2:7 – And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
This Truth Makes
God used matter that had already been formed to create man. God used the material of dust to create man. God made the most valuable part of Creation out of the least valuable part of Creation. He made the most amazing part of Creation out of the most common part of Creation. What does this choice of God’s show about the kind of Creator He is?
Can you think of anything less valuable than dust? If you needed some dust, you would not have to buy it – it is everywhere, and it is free! People clean dust out of their homes. People try to separate themselves from dust. You could not sell dust on eBay; it has no value, no worth. Nobody has a “dust collection” on purpose, but you might have one under your bed. Dust is gross, undesirable, and just plain worthless.
Could God have created man out of gold or water? Maybe the reason God used dust was to show His awesome skill in fashioning something truly wonderful out of something so worthless. God can take dirt and make something priceless out of it. What a great God!
Although Adam’s body was formed with dust, God personally breathed into him the “breath of life.” Nobody knows for sure exactly what the “breath of life” is, but the result of it was that man became a “living soul.”
