Obedience to God’s Commandments Benefits Us
Adventure 7: God's Law
Does God give us the Law to make us miserable and keep us from being happy?
No. The Law is God's good gift to us, designed for His highest glory and for our highest good. Deuteronomy 6:24 – And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day.
This Truth Makes
Imagine a human father who has a son he loves very much. Would a good father place rules on his son which were not for his son’s good? If the father did command the son to obey bad rules designed to hurt him – would anyone really believe that the father really loved his son?
The Law should be seen as the expression of God’s character and will. He does not command love or forbid murder simply because He decides to do so. His very nature loves certain actions and hates others, and God’s Law flows out of His nature. Since God is perfectly good – we can trust that anything which flows from His perfect character will be as perfectly good as He is. The Law is good. When we obey it, it benefits us!
1 John 5:2-3 – By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
