Jesus Died an Awful Death To Pay for Our Sins
Adventure 8: Jesus Christ
What kind of death did Christ die?
Christ was nailed to a cross and His blood was shed for sinners. His death was both painful and shameful. Isaiah 53:5 – But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.
This Truth Makes
Jesus died an awful death on the cross. The Bible teaches that “without the shedding of blood is no remission [forgiveness of sins]” (Hebrews 9:22).
Some of the reasons Jesus’ death was so awful are:
- Jesus experienced the emotional pain of knowing what was coming. Luke 22:44 – And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
- Jesus experienced the pain of betrayal and rejection. Isaiah 53:3a – He is despised and rejected of men.
- Jesus felt intense physical pain as He was brutally whipped and crucified. (Isaiah 52:14)
The cross is where God’s justice, and love meet. The cross is the greatest expression of God’s justice because He hates sin so much that He punished His only Son. (Isaiah 53:10) The cross is the greatest expression of God’s love. He loves you so much that He is willing to punish His Son in your place so that you might have life. (John 10:10, Romans 5:8)
- Jesus felt terrible emotional pain as His Father poured out His wrath against sin upon Jesus and then turned His back on Him. Mark 15:34 – And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
