True Faith Is a Gift from God
Adventure 9: God's Gift -- Salvation
What is "faith"?
Faith is a gift of God that makes us able to trust Him and believe His Gospel. Faith helps us to hope boldly in Christ and be sure of His truth. Ephesians 2:8-9 – For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
This Truth Makes
Even the faith that is necessary to bring us to God’s grace requires God’s grace. God’s grace is on either side of faith. Jesus is the Author and Finisher (the Beginner and Completer) of our faith. (Hebrews 12:2) Christ is the only One Who is worthy of our trust. True faith is the faith we put in Him.
Theologians refer to both “faith” and “repentance” as saving graces. In other words, both these things are necessary ingredients for saving us from sin, and yet they are also part of the salvation. But God’s Word clearly teaches our responsibility
to believe and it teaches our inability to believe – unless God miraculously intervenes. John 6:44 – No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
True faith includes an understanding of the facts of the Gospel, agreement with those facts, and a decision of your will to trust Christ as Savior. This personal decision to place your trust in Christ is something done with your heart, the part of your entire being that makes commitments for you as a whole person.
