We Must Turn Our Backs Upon Sin
Adventure 9: God's Gift -- Salvation
What is "repentance"?
Repentance is a gift from God that makes sinners willing and able to turn away from their sins and turn to Him instead. 1 Thessalonians 1:9b – You turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.
This Truth Makes
Matthew 9:13b – [Jesus said] “For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
Jesus said that He came into the world to call sinners to repentance. In the missions before this one, we have been reminded that we are definitely sinners. We have also discovered that anything that Jesus does is important – especially since He states so clearly that calling sinners to repentance was the reason why He came into the world!
Let’s look at what Jesus was talking about. True repentance affects your mind, your emotions, and your will.
Mind: Repentance is a change of mind about sin and God. Repentance causes us to think true thoughts instead of false ones.
Emotions: Repentance involves a sorrow for sin and a desire to leave sin and to be made right with God. 2 Corinthians 7:10 – For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
Will: Repentance causes you to turn your life in God’s direction. Jonah 3:10a – Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way.
True repentance never exists apart from faith. We cannot have faith without repentance, and we cannot have repentance without faith. God hates sin, and those who truly repent will feel the same way God does about sin.
