God Lovingly Sustains His Creation
Adventure 11: God's Work -- Past and Present
Who sustains and upholds all things?
Jesus sustains and upholds all things by His powers. Hebrews 1:3 – Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
This Truth Makes
God’s providence has three characteristics:
God’s providence is continual (ongoing, constant). If God were to remove His active, sustaining hand from Creation, everything would cease to be – the instant God removed Himself, things would fall apart.
God’s providence is loving. God is kind and gracious to all of His Creation.
God’s providence is skillful. God mysteriously
and miraculously works all things together (even the sin of other people) to accomplish His plans.
God does all that He does in order to accomplish His will. He keeps things alive to fulfill His plans. He sets up different rulers
to fulfill His plans. He takes away life to fulfill His plans. He causes the sun to rise to fulfill His plans. He causes beautiful weather and terrible storms to fulfill His plans. In some way, everything that is happening right now is part of God’s eternal decrees. We can truly say, “It’s all about God!”
God initially created the world by His power, and now God holds the world together and keeps it going by His power. Theologians use the word “sustain” to describe the action of
God’s Providence. This is what God is doing right now. God is sustaining the world (including you) even as you read this sentence! That means He is holding it all together and carrying it along according to His will. Colossians 1:17 – And He [Christ] is before all things, and by Him all things consist [hold together].
