The Final Authority Is the Bible
Case 1: God's Word - The Bible
What authority does God's Word have over people?
God's Word has the highest authority because it comes from God. 2 Timothy 3:16 – All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
This Truth Makes
When the Bible says that it has been given by inspiration of God, it means that God moved men to write down every word exactly as He wanted them written. The word “inspiration” here literally means “God-breathed.” Every word of Scripture has been breathed out by God. Just like a musician breathes through an instrument to produce the sound he wants, so God breathed His words through men to produce the Bible.
The Bible is profitable (useful, helpful, needed) for four different things:
Profitable for doctrine – This means that the Scriptures teach us the things we ought to believe. “Here’s what’s right.”
Profitable for reproof – This means that the Scriptures will convict us of our sin when we do wrong. “Here’s what’s wrong.”
Profitable for correction – This means that the Scriptures, if believed and obeyed, will correct our errors and mistakes. “Here’s how to change what’s wrong and make it right.”
Profitable for instruction in righteousness – This means that the Scriptures will lead us to act and live in a way pleasing to God. “Here’s how to keep what’s right right.”
Did You Know? The Word of God is the ultimate test for the truthfulness of any person's words.
Talk About It: If you came face to face with God, and He asked you to do something - would you obey? Why do you think people are hesitant to obey what God says in His Word?
