The Greatest Commandment Is Love
Case 7: God's Law
According to what Jesus taught, what are the two greatest commandments of all?
Jesus taught that loving God wholeheartedly and loving others unreservedly are the two greatest commandments. Matthew 22:37b, 39b – "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.... You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
This Truth Makes
When the scribes asked Jesus what was the greatest commandment, it was not a new question. They had been arguing for many years about which of the rules was the greatest. In their system of beliefs, they had 613 commandments to obey! 248 were positive commands (“do this”) and 365 were negative commands (“don’t do this”).
The word “sum” means the whole thing, the total, after adding up all the parts. If we could add up all the rules God ever gave, the sum of them would be Matthew 22:37 (to love God supremely). Jesus boiled all 613 commandments down into one great commandment: Love God with everything you’ve got!
When we love God more than anything or anyone else, we will not have any problems obeying His other commandments! Someone said it like this: “Love God, and do what you will.” When we love God, we will always choose the right thing. Love for God motivates us to be right and to do right.
