God’s Law Points Us to Christ
Case 7: God's Law
Why did God give the Ten Commandments?
God gave the Ten Commandments to show all of us that we are sinners who desperately need Jesus Christ's righteousness and forgiveness. Galatians 3:24a – Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ.
This Truth Makes
God’s Law does not give salvation, but it does guide to salvation. The Law is not a giver; it is a guide.
In Bible times, a schoolmaster, or tutor, was a person who prepared a child to be an adult. That tutor was more than just a teacher of math, science, and languages. He trained a child to live successfully in every aspect of life. He taught the basic wisdom that the child needed to be able to respond rightly in most important areas of life.
For those of us who are Christians, the Law has taught what we could never do perfectly, and it guided to faith in Christ, Who did fulfill the Law perfectly.
The Law still serves a purpose for Christians even after they are trusting Christ. It shows how Christians are to live in order to glorify God. Without Christ, it is impossible to obey the Law. With Christ, we are free to obey God’s commands and bring Him glory.
