Jesus Is the Mediator of a Better Covenant
Case 8: Jesus Christ
Who is the only Mediator between God and sinners, the only One able to bring us close to God?
Jesus Christ is the only Mediator between God and sinners. He alone is able to bring us close to God. 1 Timothy 2:5 – For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.
This Truth Makes
Jesus is the Mediator of a better covenant. A Mediator is someone who goes between two other people to bring them together. Since God is so much greater than us, we need a Mediator to act as a bridge so we can come near God again. But since He is God, no one but God Himself will do for a Mediator. The only One Who could bring us to God is Jesus Christ. Jesus came between God and us to make a relationship possible between us.
When Jesus came to Earth, God was setting up a New Covenant. Until that time, God had dealt with people mainly through the Old Covenant, which is found in Exodus 19:5. It is based upon man’s complete obedience to God’s Law – which, as you learned in the last Clue, is impossible for just any man to fulfill.
A covenant is like a promise, but it is even more serious than that! A covenant is an agreement between two parties. It is completely binding, which means that there is no way to get out of it. It is an agreement beyond all agreements! It is a promise that establishes a permanent relationship between two parties.
When we think of covenants that God has made with man, two should come to mind:
The Old Covenant is based on man’s perfect obedience to God’s Law. God introduced this Covenant to His people through Moses when He gave the Ten Commandments.
The New Covenant is based on Christ’s perfect obedience to God’s Law and came through Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ was 100% God and 100% man, so He met all the Old Covenant demands.
He never sinned against God’s Law. Nobody has ever earned salvation by keeping the Law. Jesus was the only One Who ever kept it, and He does not need to be saved! The people we read of in the Old Testament were under the Old Covenant, but they were still saved through faith in Christ’s righteousness. Hebrews 11 speaks of Moses’ faith in Christ.
