Faith Makes Us Sure of God’s Truth
Case 9: God's Gift - Salvation
Clue: 4

Question Answer
What is "faith"?

Faith is a gift of God that makes us able to trust Him and believe His Gospel. Ephesians 2:8-9 – For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

The Difference This Truth Makes
In Ephesians 2:8, it is a bit unclear what the phrase “the gift of God” means. But we can be certain of this: it refers either specifically to faith, or to everything necessary for salvation, or even salvation itself.

No matter what, it is clear that faith is a gift of God. Salvation begins with the grace of God. He is the One Who takes the first step in providing us salvation. Nobody deserves this wonderful gift! It is right to say that everything needed for salvation is a gift of God.

The way we receive God’s gift of salvation is through faith. True faith is humble because it causes us to realize how needy and desperate we are for Christ. If someone thinks that he deserves salvation, he does not have true faith. If someone thinks there are any good works he might do to receive salvation, he does not have true faith.

True faith is certain that Jesus saves needy sinners because of His goodness – not ours.
