God’s Children Should Do Good Works
Case 10: God's Purpose for His Children
What does it mean to 'do good works'?
To do good works means to live for God's glory by loving, obeying, and by doing things that only God's children could do with God's help. Colossians 1:10-11a – That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might.
This Truth Makes
God wants us to be fruitful Christians. Like someone planting an orange tree in order to get yummy, juicy oranges, God has planted us in Christ in order to bring forth “spiritual fruit.” Good words, good thoughts, and good actions can all be called “spiritual fruit.”
For example, one good work that can be done right after you become a Christian is to be baptized as Christ was. Baptism is a public testimony (statement of faith) that you want your life to identify with Christ.
Another good work that God commands Christians to do is to remember Christ’s sacrifice at Calvary. This practice is called “the Lord’s Supper.” The food and drink used in this event is symbolic of Christ’s body and His blood, to help us remember the price He paid to redeem us from sin.
One of the greatest works we can do as Christians is to speak the truth in love to unbelievers. Matthew 28:19-20 – Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
There are many, many other good works besides these! Jesus set an unbeatable example for doing all kinds of good works. Just take a look at this passage: John 21:25 – And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
