God Loves His Church Very Much
Case 11: God's Work - Past and Present
What is "a church"?
A church is a group of believers who meet together to worship through prayer, praise, and the preaching of God's Word because they love Jesus Christ and one another. Psalm 111:1 – Praise the LORD! I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright and in the congregation.
This Truth Makes
Your mom and dad and brothers and sisters are part of your physical family, but the Church is a spiritual family. If you are a believer, you are part of a universal family of believers – but you are also part of local body of believers.
On one hand, the word “Church” is used to describe all believers in Christ in all times and places. Matthew 16:18 – And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
Many Christians use the phrase “Invisible Church” to help explain this Church. The Invisible Church is the Church God sees – the whole group of all true believers, everywhere, past, present, and future.
But the word “church” often refers to a group of believers in one local area. 1 Corinthians 1:2 – To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours.
It is important to read the verses before and after a Scripture passage in order to discover whether God intends the word “church” to mean a local church (a specific body of believers), or the whole Church (the entire Body of Christ).
Acts 2:47 – Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
