God Provided Government To Help Us Live Rightly
Case 11: God's Work - Past and Present
What is "government"?
Government is the leadership of cities or countries. Ultimately, it is God Who appoints leaders with their positions, power, and authority. Romans 13:1b –
There is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
This Truth Makes
God set up the rulers of this world to accomplish His will. God controls the hearts of even the greatest rulers. (See Proverbs 21:1) Government was God’s idea! In Romans 13:1, God teaches us the incredible truth that He is the One Who sets up or takes down one ruler or another. God also informs us that He has given authority to these people so that they might govern.
Some public officials might think they got their power from some other source. Even Pilate thought that his power came from the nation of Rome. John 19:10-11 – Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?” Jesus answered, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”
The conversation between Pilate and Jesus shows a tremendous example of God using rulers to accomplish His will. Pilate was not a Christian, but God set him up in order to bring about His plan for Christ’s crucifixion. A leader’s power is not his own. It is given to him by God.
