God Is Merciful
Construction Zone 3: The Goodness of God
Stage: 7

Question Answer
Would God rather punish or forgive?

God loves to forgive and to show mercy by withholding judgment. Lamentations 3:22a – Through the LORD'S mercies we are not consumed.

The Difference This Truth Makes
God does not have to work at being merciful because mercy is part of His very nature. “Mercy” is the act of withholding punishment that was earned. On the other hand, when God shows grace to us, He is choosing to give us something good that we do not deserve. When God shows mercy to us, He is choosing not to give us something that we do deserve.

God desires to see us show mercy like He does. In fact, in the book of Matthew, we learn that if we do not forgive others, God will not forgive us! Matthew 6:15 – “But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

One of the truest and most meaningful songs ever written is “Jesus Loves Me.” In one of the verses it teaches this: Jesus loves me when I’m good When I do the things I should And He loves me when I’m bad Even though it makes Him sad.
