God’s Law Shows Us Our Need for Jesus
Construction Zone 7: God's Law
Why did God give the Ten Commandments?
God gave the Ten Commandments to show us why we need Jesus Christ. Galatians 3:24a – Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ.
This Truth Makes
God’s Law shows His standard (what He expects, what will please Him) of perfection. In school, a student gets either “passing” grades or “failing” grades. A failing grade means the student’s work “missed the mark” that the teacher set for him. His work was not good enough, so it did not earn the teacher’s approval.
When it comes to living up to God’s Law, we have all received a failing grade. We all miss the mark. No one has obeyed God’s Law perfectly – no one except Christ. Since Christ has never missed the mark of God’s holiness, He has God’s approval. He is able to meet our deepest needs to be forgiven and accepted by God.
God takes no pleasure in anything that does not measure up perfectly to His Law. When we come face-to-face with God’s standard (His expectations), we always fall short. But, like a failing grade, the Law does point out our need for Christ. God’s Law does not give life, but it does guide to life.
