God’s Children Should Do Good Works
Construction Zone 10: God's Purpose for His Children
What does it mean to 'do good works'?
To do good works means to live for God's glory by loving, obeying, and by doing things that only God's children could do with God's help. Colossians 1:10a – That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work.
This Truth Makes
Being holy and loving are good works. But there are more good works that we can do to please God.
For example, one good work that can be done right after you become a Christian is to be baptized like Christ was. A baptism shows publicly that you want your life to be identified with (to remind people of) the Gospel of Christ.
Another good work that God commands Christians to do is to remember Christ’s sacrifice at Calvary. This practice is called “the Lord’s Supper,” or sometimes it is called “Communion.” The food and drink used in this event is symbolic of Christ’s body and His blood. The Lord’s Supper is a time for us to remember the price Jesus paid to save us. It is also a time to remember
what it means to be in fellowship with Him and His church.
There are many other good works besides these! In fact, Jesus Himself did so many good works, people could not have recorded them all! John 21:25 – And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
